Desert ops mecha by nejinoki Desert ops mecha by nejinoki
This is from about 5 years ago, and is a fairly old one. Being in a folder named "old" is always a good indication...

The design lacks a consistent style throughout the whole structure. Not that I've overcome that today. I still can't quite figure out, but it stands out quite a lot in this one.

The only "desert" part of this is the sandy color, I guess.
The joints would probably get clogged with sand so fast without any covers over it.

I like this kind of design better conpared to those gundams sometimes, they look a bit more "doable" at least on todays tech...
And for the sand part, the head looks pretty secure enough so that sand can't cling on it, but the joints can be an issue indeed but prolly can be countered by some sort of "blower" on those parts to remove the sand as he joint moves (unless the mech would be submerge in sand totally -_- )

I don't know ... this seems intricate like a Gundam too... I borrowed a lot of design elements from them anyways :)

I think some flexible canvas cover would be the most economical way of going about it, like the covers on the Patlabor joints.

Pretty in terms of aesthetic design, but like you have mentioned, functionality and reliability is probably poor.

It'd probably need a lot of flexible covers for all the joints...

Yes. Lots of cover. Canvas perhaps?

Or rubber.
